Eye Care is important when you have diabetes because it is the third most important cause of new blindness in adults:
- Blurred Vision
- Double Vision
- Cloudy Vision
- Floating Spots in the visual field
- Curtain like shadow in the eye
- Red,irritated eyes
- Painful pressure in the eye
Cataract:
The lens of the eye,which is usually clear develops a cloud and becomes opaque.A cataract makes every thing you look at seem cloudy.
Glaucoma:
This is due to pressure building up in the eyes.Over a period of time dispressure damages the eyes main nurve which is optic nurve and may cause visual loss gradually.
Retinal Damage
The Retina may slowly get damaged by to high sugar levels and in some patients may get detached from the back of the eye.This may cause either gradual or sudden visual loss.
Important tips:
- You should keep your blood sugar and blood pressure as close to normal as you can.
- If you have a sudden loss of vision contact your doctor immediately.
- Consultant an eye specialist and not as optician.
- Inform your eye doctor that you have diabetes.
- The examination must be made on a dilated pupil,induced by eyedrops.
- Do not drive for 3 hours after an eye exam.
- Attend regular annual eye checks.
- If you are pregnent and have diabetes conssult an eye doctor during the first 3 months.
- If you are planning to get pregnent ask an eye doctor if you should have an eye exam.
- Don’t smoke.
- Don’t take alcohol.
